Ice Cream Cakes Riff on a Childhood Favorite

Ice Cream Cakes Riff on a Childhood Favorite

This strawberry-vanilla ice cream cake takes its inspiration from a Good Humor bar. It's one of the flavors that Salvatore Lo Buglio, the head baker at Little Cupcake Bakeshop, has started making for summer. An almost surreal blue velvet cake filled with blueberry ice cream and coated with lavender and green crumbs is another. He also bakes Key lime, red velvet, vanilla bean, Brooklyn blackout and espresso brownie cakes: $49 for a seven-inch ice cream cake, Little Cupcake Bakeshop in NoLIta, and in Bay Ridge and Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, littlecupcakebakeshop.com.

"Even before we actually opened our shop in 2005, we had people knocking at the door of our bakery's construction site asking if we were going to serve Brooklyn Blackout Cake," says co-owner Louie Lobuglio. People remembered the original Brooklyn Blackout cake--supposedly named for the wartime blackout drills--which originated at Ebinger's Baking Company (started in 1898 but closed since 1972). Louie and his brothers Massimo and Salvatore, the head pastry chef, decided to bring back something as close to the original as possible. "Our Brooklyn Blackout Cake is moist chocolate cake filled with chocolate ganache and chocolate buttercream, made with Dutch-process, full-fat-content cocoa from Holland, semisweet Belgian chocolate and Madagascar vanilla beans," he says. The "blackout" effect comes from frosting it with two types of chocolate icing. Read more at Food & Wine

New Shepard Fairey Mural Shows Up in Brooklyn

Sometime in the past few days, on the side a cupcake shop along St. Marks Avenue in Prospect Heights, Shepard Fairey threw one brick wall's worth of shade at Earth destroyers and climate-change deniers.

The piece is painted all in white. It shows a single eyeball shedding an oversized teardrop with our good planet inside. Read more at Patch

The 60-second advertisement for "freemium" mobile multi-player strategy video game Clash of Clans showed the Irish actor channeling his lead role in the "Taken" trilogy, all while ordering a scone from Bay Ridge's own.

"It was so exciting to know so many people recognized our shop in the commercial," Little Cupcake Co-Founder and Chef Sal LoBuglio told The Home Reporter. "I was getting phone calls all night, and customers are still calling the shop saying how excited they were to see the bakeshop on TV's biggest night."

When asked why Little Cupcake, and why the Bay Ridge location (Little Cupcake has three), LoBuglio said the shop was chosen for its homey feel and, of course, its goods.

"The producers said they scouted every bakery in New York City," the Brooklyn baker said. "They decided on Little Cupcake Bay Ridge because of its look, feel and most importantly its reputation for great dessert." Watch the video out at Home Reporter
